Working on the new base mesh: UV layout

New UV layout. Less cuts, less distortions, more Gimp-like texture. In future we will add a dynamic UV system, so the layout will be changed by morphing.

Now I'm working on the base texture.

  1. Is this the best layout? Most details on a skin texture are knees, elbows, feet, nipples and the face... all the wrinkly bits. There's not much space for that.

    I'm not sure if we also need 32 separate teeth and different textures for the right and left eye...but I'm a fan of mirrored uvs so my judgement here may be crippled.

  2. Hi,
    there are various meaning of the "best" UV. Some people think them as the most optimized space, other as the most easy to paint. These 2 things are, unfortunately, in opposite way.

    This new layout is much more flatten and less deformed of the previous one, and it has preserved the human shape, so is more easy to handle.

    Unfortunately, the 2D space is not so optimized. But it's not a big problem with modern machine, to use, in final rendering, in example a 2048x2048 instead a 1024x1024 texture.

    Of course, it can be an issue in game character, but we are working to add an "UV library", so the one above will be just the default one, and it will be changed on the fly loading a cutom one, if needed.

    For comparison, this is the old layout, take a look:

  3. Hey there Manuel

    I've been following MakeHuman for a long time, and while I don't know if this mesh is the "best" it's definitely a great improvement over the old one, so I applaud you there!

    The GUI has also come a long way from the beginning which makes me happy.

    All in all, keep up the good work, and I can't wait to see what your team comes up with next.

  4. Sorry, I see that this discussion is more about the UVs than the new mesh. Regardless of that, my comments still stand that the new mesh is great :)

  5. For me this new UV layout, though perhaps less "optimized", is more easy for texture editing;
    Thanks!
